Although the terms web development and web design are often used interchangeably, there are some significant differences between them.

Web development refers usually to building a specialized web application or Rich Internet Application (RIA) which usually includes a website component but features additional advanced functionality to replace or enhance existing business processes.

The choice between a website and a web application is usually determined by the purpose of the site or application for your business and the functional requirement specifications.
Simply put, a web application is any application that brings functionality to a website. The type of application you need determines the technology used to create it.

We distinguish front-end web applications and back-end web applications.
Front-end web applications are applications used by your visitors or clients while on your website and offer visitor value to your site: from custom shopping cart applications to pre-existing solutions such as online chat services.
Back-end web applications are those you interact with to provide a service or product for your visitors and clients like: services ticketing, order tracking and fulfillment, client and visitor tracking.

XML is one of the most common ways for two different systems to exchange data with one another. To get that data, you first send the origin and destination addresses via XML to the shipping service. Then the shipping service sends back the shipping rate and other information to you via XML.
DHTML
DHTML stands for dynamic HTML and is another way to add interactivity or other effects to a web site. One of the most common uses of DHTML is to create drop down menus which appear when a user rolls over a navigation link.
